Well, I didn't take a nap last night before my sister came over - mainly because I was working on getting the pictures from the Scotland trip off of my laptop and onto Flickr. You can see them now - however I warn that I haven't "edited" them so there are a lot of apparent repeats due to exposure tests.
America's Next Top Model was good! I was so glad that Whitney - the plus size model in the competition - has not only survived again, but she also wasn't in the bottom two as I suspected she would be. With the remaining three chosen - and one of them being a plus size model - I really wonder what kind of runway show they're going to do. It may not even matter of course, if Whitney is cut before, but I'm keeping my fingers crossed. If anything, I just hope that this gives the next plus size contestant more confidence that you can make it far in the competition if you just keep trying. Whitney said it best in her interview reel - the last plus size contestants all gave up eventually and it had very little to do with their ability to be a model. I'll be happy if Anya wins though, because I'm not a big fan of Fatima. Its surprising that I say that now because when I first began watching I hated Anya because of her accent - I fear that's going to hold her back when they do their Cover Girl commercials next week.
Tonight I've made no plans and I'm just going to relax! I'm going to go home, get some stuff together for my lunch tomorrow because I'm determined to try and bring a Bento box, take a quick bath as I'm hairy like a beast, and then hit the hay early...
What's the best thing you ever bought off of Ebay or Craigslist?
Oh this is difficult to answer because I'm forced to buy a lot from eBay due to the fact that I like imports. Here's a list of some of the good stuff I've bought:
- These niffy doll shoes, which I don't think I would have been able to get for such a good price - even off of my dolly website.
- My Sooni DaL, Hitomi, who was out of stock every place else when I really wanted to buy her.
- The great and beautiful bento box :)

This was my lunch today. I got sick of the Bentos by Wednesday of last week and skipped on them Thursday & Friday. I made one today though, and it was good :)
It was good and I was hungry. Tonight I'm going to the store and I'm not picking up carrots - but I am picking up other fruits, veggies, more eggs, & some kind of meat other than spam :) What other meat require little heating/refrigeration/preparation though? Spam really is the wonder meat.Hard boiled egg
Baby carrots (thank God, bag is gone)
Kiwi
Sushi w/ white rice & spam rolled in nori (first time putting spam inside!)
Bento Box, 1st Attempt!, originally uploaded by maura_ea.
Everything about this has been a learning experince:
- I'm glad that I made the sushi rice a few times (total of two - not including this batch) before making it for my lunch because I got the process down.
- Wet my knife between each cut when slicing the sushi roll or else the sticky rice begins to pull out on the knife.
- Cut everything into small pieces in the bento box in order to "fill in gaps".
- The tiers are very shallow and I'm going to have to learn how to deal with them (1st lesson? Make a tighter, smaller roll of sushi so I don't have to squish it in my bento box!). I could just get a box that has more tiers or is shaped differently but I really like this one so I wont.
- No matter the cost I need a frackin' sauce bottle! I forgot to bring my jug o' soy sauce so I'm going to have to rummage in the communal refrigerators and hope to find some or else I'm going to have to go back home. I simply CAN'T eat my rice without something and I didn't use any wasbi and I didn't bring any of my pickled ginger.
- I bought spam and I'm going to try that out tomorrow, I'm going to buy some pickled ginger tonight as well.
So I've made my first Bento Box today. I tried to keep in mind having fruits, veggies, protein and rice all in the bento box - and I think I succeeded. It didn't look like that much food though, so I made sure to pack really good snacks. So today I'm eating the following:
I'm really hoping that I'm not going to be feeling hungry at all because I think this is a fantastic amount of good food. I hate it that I only feel full and satisfied for a good amount of time when I eat high fat foods like cheeseburgers and stuff. Don't get me wrong - I understand why and all that - I just wish it wasn't true.Breakfast:
Bowl of mini wheats
Low fat soy milk
(Also snacked on some apple, rice & lunch meat due to me packing the bento box :P )Snack:
1/2 nectarine
Grapes
Low fat string cheeseLunch:
1/2 nectarine
Baby carrots
1 hard boiled egg
Sushi-like item (rice & lunch meat wrapped in nori)Snack:
1/2 apple
Grapes
Triscuts
Thanks to all who suggested some stuff to add to my diet - I'm hoping that it works :)
It's been delivered! Well... according to the website - I haven't gotten home to check yet but I'm sure it's there :) Yay! I got my food & my bento box today! On another note, my dad laughed at me (virtually - I was chatting with him) when I told him I was going to make sushi. I shouted (again, virtually) "Why are you laughing?!" and he said because it sounds funny to "make" sushi - he says, "Its it just raw fish?"
Anyhow. I'm excited to go home in four minutes. I've got a terrible headache and I just want to relax. Everyone have a great weekend!
The United States Postal Service sucks. I find they are the least reliable of all the postal carriers I have to deal with. The thing I hate the most is their "tracking" service. For three days now it's said "Electronic Shipping Info Received" which basically means "we've been paid". That pisses me off because I know I'll likely GET the package before their damn tracking service is even updated and it's coming from CALIFORNIA! Meanwhile - UPS has my other package tracked and recorded six ways from Sunday and it came from New York. How is that possible?
In other shipping news, after buying the Bento Box I went online to Cooking Cute and stole the list of bento staples and found this online site that was basically a Japanese grocer. Paul kept telling me to go to this huge Asian store near his parents house because I'd likely find it cheaper - but I told him I was scared of that place. Why?, he asked. Why? Because all of the packaging and signs are in Korean/Chinese/Japanese and the last thing I want is to go in there - blonde, blue eyed, fat & ignorant of the language - and ask someone where the rice is. So I found this online store and it was perfect because I was able to buy all of the authentic brands, pay great prices, such low shipping!, and have an English translation of a lot of the items. That's "OUT FOR DELIVERY" as UPS says, as I write this. So tonight when I get home I'll have my rice, sushi seasoning (pre-made rice vinegar mixture), & my new rice cooker to try it all out in.
Unfortunately, I may not have my bento box by then :(
Look what I just bought! (PHOTO NOT MINE)
I got it off of eBay and I'm so excited! Paul is going to work on Saturday so I think I'm going to hit up the store some time this week for some bento box essentials and try out some recipes - I'm so excited!
However, I do need to buy more stuff. For one, I've decided to buy a rice cooker. I know that you can make sushi rice without a rice cooker - however the process takes more energy and time because you can't use any kind of instant rice. I also need to buy some molds for the onigiri, nigiri, musubi & sushi in general.
I'm so anal retentive in fact, that the idea of molds totally rocks my socks :)
