Last night I went and saw Kung Fu Panda - which was a lot of fun with a lot of great voice acting. It wasn't as over packed as I thought it'd be - and so enjoying the movie and the plot was not difficult even with all the loud kids around us.
Afterward I stopped at the supermarket because we've been surviving on just the minimum for awhile and I was sick of it. So I bought all the staples and also a few other things I've been wanting in regards to making a bento box or two. I felt really inspired and productive when I got home - despite the late hour - so I took some time and made some rice and prepared that for today. With the rice out of the way - most of the prep was easy but I still haven't found my "groove" so it still took me an extra 15 minutes to get everything together. I brought a pretty simple box of rice, chicken marinaded in a garlic sauce, broccoli and some seaweed wrapped crackers as a treat :)
I keep checking out this site called Just Bento and it inspires me but it also reminds me that I just don't put enough time and effort into my diet and more importantly food prep in general. What I wouldn't give for a cooking class! I did find this book I want to buy - its a 6 ingredients or less healthy eating book. I have a 6 ingredients or less slow cooker book but if it's not really fatty then its got a lot of "ready made" expensive items in it. Such a waste.
On a side note, I accidentally put on white sport socks this morning instead of my black work socks. Good thing I bought new pants that are long enough again or else I'd be doing the Michael Jackson Thriller look all day long.
I'm eating terribly today, and it's not even 7:45am...
6:10am, Diet Pepsi
6:30am, hand full of Skittles
7:30am, Guerrilla Bread*
*Just like Monkey Bread, accept it has cream cheese inside.
I went to bed at 8:30pm last night, and that was me trying to keep my eyes open. Luckily, when I woke up at 4:30am this morning, I felt refreshed and counted eight hours of sleep so I just stayed up and used the extra hour to take my time getting ready and also getting to work early in order to catch up before the calls started to pour in.
Work, not surprisingly, held up fine without me. However, there was a bit of drama in the form of a co-worker of mine getting fired on the spot! No one knows all the details, but apparently it had something to do with "theft". All the interesting stuff happens when I'm gone. I do feel welcomed back though, and that's very nice :) Oh! And while I was gone Jane got a temp job at my work! So starting next Tuesday she'll be here for at least six months! I'm hoping that having a friend here will help me with this "changing" I have to do.
Yesterday Paul & I went on the hunt for this fresh produce store I'd heard about and ended up getting lost on the way there and on the way back. The good news is that the store is exactly what I was looking for! The bad news is that it's not that close and so we can't go there often enough to take advantage of it. Most of the food is organic and doesn't have preservatives - so its only good for a day or two. Plus, they don't have a lot of stuff we usually get - so we'd have to visit two stores. I'm tempted though, very tempted. The produce was just so fresh and the best price - I was shocked and so happy. The other good news? They're apparently opening a store across the street from us in 2009! We'll see how it all pans out.
Yesterday we also went and saw Iron Man, which I really enjoyed! I've never read the comic, so I can't say anything in relation - but the movie was great. I was worried that the whole thing would be CGI, but it was tastefully done. I'm hoping that the sequel will be released soon. If you haven't seen it, if you do see it - stay until after the credits. Paul also says that Tony Stark is supposed to be having a cameo in the new The Hulk flick staring Edward Norton - so that'll be interesting.
I was eating dinner by myself because Paul was wrapped up in WoW. I really wanted to eat with chopsticks so I made the last packet of shimp ramen. I wanted to beef it up though, because I don't feel that noodles alone are very complete dinner so I added large cooked shrimp and last nights mixed veggies. I called it "ULTIMATE RAMEN!"
My Dollmore order was shipped from the group coordinator today, and the person doing Linnet's touch up picked her up today and my Souldoll order would have been dropped off but I was at work so I'm going to pick it up tomorrow during my lunch. I hope that by the end of next week Linnet is in one piece, with her new wig, eyes & outfit - I'm so excited! Now all I need is the boots I ordered from eBay though I still haven't heard from the seller :(
Lately I've been slacking on my diet - I'm not on a particular "weight loss" diet - I just talking about generally consumption of food. I like to bring a bit of everything with me to work and the general consensus is 2 fruits, 2 veggies, 2 protein, some crackers for carbs (though carbs are in everything I eat) and then a low-calorie meal to go. I've been doing really poorly at trying to get all of these things in my diet, so I'm making a very good effort and have been succeeding as of late.
I rediscovered the orange. On an average, I don't like oranges, but I couldn't remember why until I bought them again. Despite the fact that I'm enjoying them - I'm also extremely frustrated. When, between being ten years old and my ripe old age of 24.5, did they become so hard to peel?! I was never very good at it, but I thought it was my age (being 10, and even then I still succeeded mostly) so when I bought them again I was more optimistic. I took a stab at peeling and instead got doused in orange juice and the acidic juice made the teeny cuts on my fingers sting like the dickens.
Obviously, the orange chose to elude me. I went online yesterday and typed in "how to peel an orange" thinking there was a techique. Surely oranges weren't that difficult to peel, right? I mean if kids (minus me) can do it, I'm sure I can! The many how-to sites made it seem simple. They all suggested scouring the orange peel with a knife in a corkscrew fashion and then just peeling off the orange peel. Easy, right?
No. Today I tried it and successfully got my thumb stuck inside, feeling violated I yanked it out only to shower my face with orange juice and get a healthy dose of vitamin D in my eye. Thanks!
What's your favorite thing to drink when it's cold outside?
I like to drink hot soups - such as chicken noodle or vegetable. I've never been one for sugary drinks so coco and the like are out (though occasionally I'm in the mood for them). I'm also not much of a drinker - but I do appreciate the heating capabilities :)
What's been your worst experience at a restaurant?
There are two that stand out in my mind the most - both at the same Chili's restaurant.
The first was over a year (maybe even two) ago, we went there after church and there was a group of us - about six. We have this waiter who seems really nice and funny and generally understandable of our age and preferences - he must have been in his late twenties. After our lunch - which came out fine - he drops off our check. We put our money into the little pouch and wait. But he never comes back. After about twenty minutes I get up and hunt down a hostess and explain we'd been waiting for awhile for someone to come pick up our check. She takes down our table and says someone will be right over. A couple of minutes pass and the manager comes over. He says that our waiter quit. Up and left the restaurant without even taking off his little apron. He apologized for the inconvenience of waiting and offered to give us our lunch for free. We felt bad taking the offer because we felt like we'd been difficult customers or something - but really we hadn't! Not compared to our late night Islands trip all hopped up on sugar (<-- a trip that made me realize I hate Islands because of how they treated us - so rudely! - just because we were happy and in good spirits). The manager assured us that it wasn't our table that made him quit, he'd been threatening to do it for ages.
The second time I was with my sister & brother-in-law and they were kindly babysitting me while Paul was in Atlanta for his MCSE bootcamp for two weeks. We were sitting in a booth, my sister & I on one side and my brother-in-law on the other. Soon after we sat down two women sat in the booth behind us. They ordered drinks, were having a great time, and in the process completely pissing me off. The booth seat I was sitting in is shared with the booth seat behind us and they weren't stabilized very well. So in this "jolly" woman's drink induced, excessively exaggerated story telling - she was moving the booth a lot. I know that might sound like nothing, but I'm very attuned to that kind of stuff and it was very annoying. My brother-in-law took pity on me and switched me seats, but our terrible night didn't end there. We ordered an appetizer which arrived with the food and when we asked to have them taken off of our bill (we weren't going to eat them) our waitress acted as though we'd slapped her. The food was cold, which really bothered me, especially because we were waiting so long for our appetizer. We got next to no attention from our waitress after she brought us food and we had to stop two other waiters in order to get refills on our $3.50 sodas. When she finally brought the check, we were quick to get the money in there because we were tired. We hardly even had the check holder on the table before she snatched it out of our hands. Oh, so it's going to be like that, eh? We can't get a frackin' hot meal or cold sodas from you but when it comes to you getting paid you can't be any quicker?! Nice.
Sadly, we still go to this restaurant. We're like cats - we forgive & forget easily.
Bento Box, 1st Attempt!, originally uploaded by maura_ea.
Everything about this has been a learning experince:
- I'm glad that I made the sushi rice a few times (total of two - not including this batch) before making it for my lunch because I got the process down.
- Wet my knife between each cut when slicing the sushi roll or else the sticky rice begins to pull out on the knife.
- Cut everything into small pieces in the bento box in order to "fill in gaps".
- The tiers are very shallow and I'm going to have to learn how to deal with them (1st lesson? Make a tighter, smaller roll of sushi so I don't have to squish it in my bento box!). I could just get a box that has more tiers or is shaped differently but I really like this one so I wont.
- No matter the cost I need a frackin' sauce bottle! I forgot to bring my jug o' soy sauce so I'm going to have to rummage in the communal refrigerators and hope to find some or else I'm going to have to go back home. I simply CAN'T eat my rice without something and I didn't use any wasbi and I didn't bring any of my pickled ginger.
- I bought spam and I'm going to try that out tomorrow, I'm going to buy some pickled ginger tonight as well.
