GreatestJournal is dead. Officially.
Awhile back when GreatestJournal started having problems I wondered if I wanted to even grab my old posts, then I decided that the posts were important to me and I was going to put them here on Vox using the backdating option. I moved over a few, but before I knew it GreatestJournal really fell through the cracks and I vowed to power through reposting my journal entries because I had no idea how long I had. I got as far as May 12 2004 - though I still had entries until November 2006.
Well, I didn't have very long. I'm not sure exactly when it happened but GreatestJournal is show a 403 error when you try and access the site and I'm assuming there's not going to be a way to retrieve anything.
Checking my backups, I realized that I backed up my official entries until June 20th 2005, and I have drafts until December 30th 2005 - however only when I had a lot to say did I make a draft.
Needless to say, I'm disappointed in myself because I took too long. That's a lot of memories, lost. I have GOT to start backing up my Vox!
I don't know what I was thinking - I bid on TWO cameras on eBay and though I have 3 days left to be outbid on one and 4 days left to be outbid on the other, if I'm not outbid on either of them I could be in the hole for $60 and two cameras when I really only need one! The problem was the price. Both are located in the UK so while £1.50 seems like an excellent price, it's actually $25.95 after the conversion and adding on shipping! I'm such a dolt.
In other news, GreatestJournal has officially kicked the bucket. I can still access my old posts but I don't know for how long. I'm going to make a real effort to move over as many as I can because that was a whole 3+ years of my life I don't want to forget. For one thing, it was about starting my career, starting my relationship with Paul (reading all those amazing discovers about my <3 for him is a lot of fun), moving out on my own for the first time - a lot of big things. I just wish there was a way for me to do a massive dump and then go back and edit them all. But the last time I tried that I wasn't very successful. I've gotten as far as the beginning of April of 2004 so I have made some progress. It was August of 2004 that I stopped my temp work and then my posts were really only once a month. Then I started up again in January of 2005 and was pretty steady until the end of 2006.
Oh well, if I want it that bad I'll work for it - right?
I'm going to start moving over my old posts from my GreatestJournal blog again. If I remember correctly, despite the fact that I back-date them, they still appear for all of you guys - if at least temporarily.
So just keep all of that in mind if you happen to read anything that sounds completely out of place for my personality.
I've decided to weed through my posts and add them here on Vox using the backdating feature (you'll now notice that I posted 16 times in 2003 - when Vox was but a twinkle in 6A eyes...), and once I'm done to begin to back them up each month. I'm not sure how yet - but I'm going to figure it out. I've just decided that I don't want to loose them!
All the ones that I've moved over so far (and I'm going to keep this naming convention) are titled "[GreatestJournal] Original Post Title" so that I know where Vox ended and began. If anyone gets a bug up their butt to read these past entries, please keep in mind that in 2003 I was 20 years old - so take a bit of pity on me :P
As some of you may know, before Vox my blogging space was GreatestJournal, not to be confused with LiveJournal. Well GJ is having some troubles, and it doesn't look like they're trying to fix them and are instead directing people to start using InsaneJournal (what's with all these spaceless-titled journals?!). I'm torn as to what I want to do because I don't want to leave my postings to be let free in the wind of careless admins but I don't know if I want to trouble through weeding through them to choose the best. To make matters worse, there are some posts I'd like to keep that have pictures (very rare of me, but I still did it) and GJs picture server is down (with no news as to when it'll be back up) and so there are some I'd like to keep that I can't because the pictures are missing.
This has also gotten me thinking, what am I going to do when Vox becomes extinct? Its sure to happen, nothing lives forever. I'd like to keep these entries for as long as I can and look back on them when I'm 80 and remember that I was (somewhat) smart & witty & full of life & energy. Will Vox be here in 55 years? Will blogs even be here in 55 years?
Food for thought people, food for thought.
Yesterday at lunch I was thoroughly bored, so after updating my journal I decided I was going to browse around through the Greatest Journal profiles and see if I could find someone who seemed to stand out - so far as content. I was surprised to find (or should I say not find?) not one single person who stood out to me. There were a few factors in these findings:
1) A lot of the profiles I browsed through were "Friends Only"
2) I'm a little turned off by the word fuck, shit, cunt, dick, and cock (reasonably)
3) Many of the journals were about people I didn't know - and the journal owner didn't care to explain
So my next try was to search based on my interests - but I soon discovered I lacked many interests and the ones I had listed were so broad the search produced something in the range of a thousand matches. Then after amending my interests (which many might want to check out - I was forced to honesty) the searches were - to say the least - just plain odd. Many of the matches either JUST started the journal or the last post was stating their separation from the site.
Yeesh! Was I to find no one? All I want is to hear about someone who doesn't screw their significant other in the bathroom or think Nascar so interesting they find it very satisfying to report the results of each lap of each player and their highlights (for the record I have nothing against racing - I just don't find it interesting to hear second hand).
If anyone has any suggestions PLEASE SAY SO!
