I've realized that I don't always pick the most intelligent games to play :) My newest love, though I still enjoy WTF, is LocoRoco. In this game, you start as a small ball of goo and you collect berries that makes you a bigger ball of goo :) Seems simple, and it is, but at the same time very challenging. You use the right & left shoulder buttons on the PSP to tilt the world 30° in either direction and it causes LocoRoco to roll in that direction. You can also jump. As you grow. you'll find you can't fit into some spaces so you can break down into smaller pieces and then reassemble at the end of the tunnel! Most times you can go back by tilting the world - but sometimes you cant and that's where the difficulty lies. The point of each level is to collect as many berries as you can (max is 20), as many pickories (which range in the hundreds and can be used as currency in the mini games), and also Mui Mui's which range between 3 to 4 each level. Each Mui Mui you get you also get a LocoRoco house piece. I'm not that interested into building a house - but I thought to mention anyhow.
There are a few reasons I love this game:
- Its frackin' cute! You're a ball of smiling goo people! And you just get bigger & bigger!
- The music is nice, and I've discovered that it's an imaginary language that they're singing in :) When you break apart into many LocoRocos, it sounds like a choir which is just too cute.
- The games technical dynamics are actually quite impressive, as the goo gets bigger you take on the consistency of a water balloon which is very interesting.
- Its easy, and the replay value is good - I'm already to world three but I've played each level over and over and over again. It gets harder and harder though.
Awhile ago, my co-worker was selling his PSP. He never played with it anymore and it was in good condition, and not surprisingly Paul was interested. So we bought it and last night picked up our first game - WTF which stands for Work Time Fun. We'd seen this game ages ago reviewed on G4, I remember it because it had Dr Tran on the cover, though the game really has nothing to do with Dr. Tran. Its basically just a bunch of mini-games. The point of the entire game is that you're a working stiff and you're given multiple part time jobs to make a bit of money. With the money you visit the vending machines which dispense hollow Easter eggs with trinkets, more games, or tools inside.
It might sound boring, but let me tell you... It. Is. Hilarious. The mini games are so odd and most times morbid to the degree of funny. One game that is very addictive is where you're a lumberjack and you chop the wood when it's put in front of you - except sometimes they put bunnies & puppies and you accidentally chop them instead because you're required to react in a certain amount of time - and then you lose.
Another game I liked was called Chick Sorting. You're given this big group of chicks to sort by either Heaven Bound, Boy or Girl. The faster you go the more you sort in the ten minute time frame and yet you make mistakes by going so fast. When you put a Heaven Bound chick in the right place a chorus of holy sounding music plays :P
I think what makes this game so frackin' hilarious is the fact that it's all fantastically pointless and simple. There isn't a lot of learning to do and yet all of the games have reaction-based properties so you're still entertained and using your mind a bit. One game you simply put caps on pens. I'm not joking. You put a cap on a pen and moved to the next one - if the pen is upside down you flip it over before putting the cap on - simple as that. Yet, as I said addicting and such a great time waster.
The tools you get are pretty funny too. One is called "The Handy Light" which is basically the PSP screen blanking out to completely white so that a lot of light is put out and you can used it to light your way. Another is a Ramen Timer - with either a sexy chick or a steamy guy to pass the three minutes with you (pretty funny in fact because this is originally a Japanese game so they've just dubbed over the Japanese man and woman and that seems to make it even funnier).
Anyhow, like I said - this game is great :)
