Title: Breaking Dawn
Author: Stephanie Meyer
Genre: YA Fiction
Pages: 768
Synopsis: Everyone knows what this book is about, so I'm not going to waste time trying to write a synopsis and the only one I can find online to copy & paste is a rather harsh one from Publishers Weekly. However, if you're interested in that scathing review you can catch it here :P
Thoughts so far: I've been behind, terribly behind, on posting about my reading. It may just appear I haven't been reading at all? Quite the opposite, I've actually been reading a lot just haven't been finishing too much :P But I finished this about a week after starting it and I have to say that while I didn't love everything - it was a good ending to the story.
**SPOILERS**
Some thoughts I had while reading the book:
- Where did that story about the Immortal Children fit in? My answer? No where. And because it didn't fit in anywhere, it tipped me off to what was going to happen so I really wasn't the least be surprised and a bit bored to find out that Bella was pregnant. Not surprised, and bored as I said, because I caught on the moment Meyer's started hinting about Bella being hungry and really tired. Perhaps its because I'm adult and I know that whenever someone wants to hint to pregnancy they choose specific clues, but all the same I felt it was messy story telling.
- Never again will I root for Jacob - simply because I had to be in the head of that immature jealously mean character. I really didn't enjoy reading from his point of view and found myself having to re-read paragraphs because of my boredom. HOWEVER! I am immensely glad that Bella's pregnancy was not narrated by any of the Cullen clan because THAT would have been even more boring and annoying.
- I very much enjoyed Nessie as a character, I felt that Meyer's did a good job rounding her out.
- I liked the ending, as I didn't want to read about a war, and I am a sucker for happy endings.
- I felt Meyers did a great job with the "delivery" scene, as I was very much on the edge of my seat and could visualize everything she was trying to show me.
- If I have to hear one more person say, "Oh Bella having a baby is SO original!" I think I'm going to kill myself. Has no one read The Last Vampire series by Christopher Pike? Particularity Evil Thirst?! Get with the times you fake vampire lovers!!! Hehehe...
I'm at Part II in Breaking Dawn and let me just say this:
Stephanie - I thought you'd lost it. I was wrong.
A bit happened this weekend, it was a bit longer than usual so that was bound to happen :)
Friday was our book signing, and everything went really really well. I drove down with one other girl in our four girl gaggle and we snagged us some spots that were too far from the front. However, we found out that one of our four had a cousin in the audience who is a big fan of the author and was in the FRONT ROW and saved us all seats! Very awesome, even if they were all the way to the right. She came in and answered some questions and then began signing books. Knowing we were number 700something out of 1000 we decided to pop out into the hotel cafe and waste some time. Once we got back we began talking with the cousin and that crowd and found that they were actually pretty close with the author - before she became really really famous. We found out a bunch about her, the Twilight series (I've been sworn to secrecy) and about the fandom. It was all really interesting and eye opening. Because we were talking with them - and we knew they were waiting until the end - we decided to wait to. So eleven o'clock hit and most everyone had cleared out and we were ushered up to get our books signed. The author was really cool - but it was a bit of a let down. Her publisher was a complete bitch - wouldn't allow the author to give us any kind of eye to eye contact it seemed and as soon as her pen left that last book she was pulled to her feet and rushed out. I understand (she'd been signing books non-stop for the last three hours, 900+) - it was just a bit of a let down. Plus her signature wasn't really her name - just a bunch of squiggles. Haha, I'm sure that mine would look even worse after three straight hours! I didn't get home until three and I passed out directly afterwards.
Saturday we slept late and then went and saw Indiana Jones. I didn't hate it, but I felt that the hype was just too much. There were a few scenes where I felt it was unbelievable that Indiana Jones could physically perform that way - but luckily there weren't too many of those. I also saw a lot of elements from other movies - which was a bit annoying. I know that there are no truly original films anymore - but I felt it was just too similar. I've put a few of my thoughts in the spoiler box below...
I don't believe the love story between Indy & Marion at all - sorry. I don't believe that Indy survived an atomic bomb in a refrigerator - sorry. What was with those kung-fu masters in the middle of the graveyard?! Completely out of place and pointless. The scene where the big ants attack, exactly like the flesh eating beetles out of The Mummy. At the end where Indy is trying to get his back-stabbing friend to leave the treasure, exactly like out of the The Mummy. The part where they go into the treasure room and find all the artifacts, exactly like out of National Treasure.
Sunday we didn't do a lot - other than clean up after Ripley. She seemed to digress so much this weekend, which was a disappointment. We've had to step back a lot - I just hope it wont take weeks to get back to where we were because she was doing so good! We did general cleaning too - finally bought a new vacuum as our other one was completely shot. Vacuuming really brought to attention all the stains we have so I'm going to look into having the carpets cleaned soon as its becoming embarrassing.
Monday we spent the day with my sister - going to lunch and then watching a movie at their place. We headed home early and just relaxed - though I didn't get to bed until close to 1am. I'm going to be paying for that later today with a bitter cup of coffee :(

Title: The Host
Author: Stephanie Meyers
Genre: Fiction
Pages: 620
Synopsis: Melanie Stryder refuses to fade away. The earth has been invaded by a species that take over the minds of their human hosts while leaving their bodies intact, and most of humanity has succumbed. Wanderer, the invading "soul" who has been given Melanie's body, knew about the challenges of living inside a human: the overwhelming emotions, the too vivid memories. But there was one difficulty Wanderer didn't expect: the former tenant of her body refusing to relinquish possession of her mind. Melanie fills Wanderer's thoughts with visions of the man Melanie loves-Jared, a human who still lives in hiding. Unable to separate herself from her body's desires, Wanderer yearns for a man she's never met. As outside forces make Wanderer and Melanie unwilling allies, they set off to search for the man they both love.Featuring what may be the first love triangle involving only two bodies, THE HOST is a riveting and unforgettable novel that will bring a vast new readership to one of the most compelling writers of our time.
Thoughts so far: I started this book the day after it came out and finished it in twelve days. I wanted to read it more, but I just couldn't seem to find the time. This book was really great, something where you put it down and you wanted to just pick it back up and continue the story even though the book had ended. I'm a fan of the Twilight Series, but I have to say I liked this one more, and I can't say why. It was seeped in enough sci-fi to be different but it was still very much down to earth and understandable & believable. The product tag line is, "Sci-Fi for people who don't like Sci-Fi".
My next read? I'm lost again. I'm only on book ten and I should be on book 18. I'm sad to realize I likely wont complete my challenge before the year is out - but I'm still really going to try. I love reading. I just wish I forced myself to find the time to do it! I was reading the first in the Earthsea series while in Scotland, but haven't finished it. I began reading Carpe Demon: Adventures of a Demon-Hunting Soccer Mom by Julie Kenner but that wasn't very good and so I gave up on it. Maybe I'll try again...
I don't think I've mentioned much on here about this, but I'm a fan of the Twilight series of books. The author of the Twilight series, Stephanie Meyers, has just released her first book written and geared towards adults while the Twilight series was geared more towards young-adults even though it ended up being enjoyed by a much wider audience. The book, entitled The Host, was released yesterday - and as part of a promotion the author is doing a book tour. My sister got me and a bunch of us others tickets to the book signing and yesterday she picked up our books and tickets to the May 23rd event.
Last night my sister had a "release party" and made gift bags to hand out with the books - it was so much fun! We made bookmarks for using when reading The Host and we're going to get together again soon to make t-shirts to wear to the book signing later this month. I'm so excited! I love doing fan stuff, makes me feel less like a minority in my interests :)
I went home last night early because I'm still getting use to the time change again - though I've nearly tackled it - and I wasn't able to even crack the book open :( I'm hoping that I'll have some time today while at work, but likely not. What sucks is that while I used to take my lunch during the majority of the staff's lunch hour and so therefore have a bit of peace, quiet and privacy while at my desk - I've been forced to change my lunch hour to 11am-12pm in order to cover the lunch hour. My only hope now to get an uninterrupted lunch is to go out to my car!
Has any other neighbors, other than Tracy who's been keeping me in the loop so far as the Twilight movie goes, read the Twilight series or is interested in Stephanie Meyers new book The Host?
What's the best book you read this year?
This one is hard to answer because I can't look past the final Harry Potter book - but I feel bad letting it "win" because it happened to be anticipated by me for a good seven years. So I guess I'd say, aside from Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows, the Twilight series has also been pretty good.
I feel like I'm missing something though...
I'm lazy and don't want to turn on my computer to post despite my excitement - so this is from my Sidekick :)
I'm pretty happy - and not surprised - to hear that Stephanie Meyer is writing a 4th book in the Twilight Trilogy (now termed 'saga'). I was telling Paul I had my doubts because the end of the 3rd one was pretty open and unfinished - yet there was not a sneak peek like at the end of her other two books. I would have just excused the lack of sneak peek on account of the 3rd book being hardcover - but the 2nd one was hardcover too. She'll be calling it Breaking Dawn and it should be released in the Fall of 2008. I also found out that they're making a movie from the (1st, Twilight) book starring the girl who played Jody Foster's daughter in 'Panic Room' (and more recently starred in 'The Land of Women' with Meg Ryan). I think she'd work well as Bella - I'm just anxious to see who they pick for Edward.
Does anyone else out there read this series and want to give me their thoughts?
